These easy baked sweet potato fries are the perfect combination of salty and sweet, and you can customize them in so many ways by adding different spices!

What You’ll Need for This Recipe

Ingredients for making sweet potato fries on a counter.

Olive oil: You can use coconut oil or vegetable oil instead If desired.

Salt: Season after baking and try adding your favorite spices or herbs. I love them with cracked black pepper and Chinese five spice.

How to Make Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potatos getting cut into quarter inch sticks.

    1. Arrange the racks in your oven to the center and above then preheat to 400F. Peel your sweet potatoes and cut down the middle lengthwise then cut into quarter inch slices and once more into sticks.

    2. Sprinkle with cornstarch then toss for even coverage. You can drop the potatoes onto the cutting board to get rid of any excess corn starch.

Sweet potato pieces getting drizzled with olive oil and arranged on a baking sheet.

    3. Transfer potato pieces to baking sheets lined with parchment paper or a silicone mat then drizzle olive oil and toss. If you have a spray bottle for your olive oil this is the perfect time to use it.

    4. Arrange the sweet potatoes on your baking sheet leaving about an inch between each piece. Bake at 400F for 15 minutes.

Sweet potato fries being seasoned with salt just after baking.

    5. Remove from oven then use tongs to flip each piece over. That’s a full 180 degree flip. Bake for an additional 8-10 minutes or until golden underneath.  Turn oven off.

    6. Season to taste with salt and any other spices you enjoy. You can return to your still warm oven for about 20 minutes to further crisp up and stay warm if desired.

    Pro Tips for this Recipe

    • Mind the rack position! Fries will burn when closer to the bottom of your oven. Center rack is perfect but you can have a rack towards the top as well, just allot more bake time for it.
    • The easiest way to get an even distribution of corn starch is to sift it over the sweet potato then toss.
    • You can prep ahead and soak your cut sweet potato in cold water for up to 24 hours.
    • Some spices you might enjoy adding: cinnamon, chili powder, garlic salt, cumin, curry powder, cajun seasoning, and even minced parsley for a pop of color.
    • Warm your fries in the oven at 300F for about 8 minutes.
    • Cut the pointy tips off of your sweet potato pieces before baking, they tend to burn.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good condiment for these?

Try these with some good old fashioned ketchup, money mustard, or a creamy aioli sauce.

    Do you peel sweet potatoes?

Peeling sweet potatoes isn’t a must but I always do; the texture and taste are not the best.

How can I warm them up?

After baking and seasoning an easy way to keep your fries warm is to place them back in your warm oven. If they’ve gotten ice cold then pop them in at 300F for about 10 minutes.

What can I season them with?

With just a little salt this sweet and salty snack is pretty much perfect but you can add so many other things as well. Black pepper is great and so is chili powder, curry, cumin, cinnamon, Chinese five spice, and garlic powder. You can also sprinkle with parmesan, chopped parsley or even serve them nacho style with some pub cheese.

    Equipment

    • Baking Sheet
    • Sharp knife
    • Cutting board

    Ingredients

    • 2 pounds sweet potatoes about 2 medium-large or 3 medium
    • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
    • ½ teaspoon fine sea salt plus more to taste
    • 1/4 cup olive oil

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 400F. Peel your sweet potatoes then cut into roughly 1/4" thick sticks.
    • Sprinkle cornstarch over the sweet potato then toss so they are evenly covered. Drizzle olive oil over the fries and toss once more for even coverage.
    • Arrange fries on baking sheets lined with parchment paper or silicone mats. Make sure to give about an inch of space between each one, if they are too close you'll steam them and they'll be soggy.
    • Bake at 400F for 8-10 minutes or until golden on the bottom then flip each one over and bake another 8-10 minutes. If you're baking on multiple racks swap places after the flip.
    • Dump fries onto a wire rack and allow to cool for 2 minutes then return to baking sheet and sprinkle with salt and any other desired seasonings to taste.
