If your kids are obsessed with this game they are going to absolutely love this fun and impressive Among Us cake. It’s made with a delicious vanilla cake and buttercream frosting which are both totally customizable and then decorated with the fun Among Us characters in space! There are a few steps involved to decorate this cake but they are simple, there’s nothing overly technical here and my step by step photos and tips make it super easy to create. See my full recipe tutorial below including some important tips and notes on ingredients!

What you need to make this recipe

Cake – before starting you’ll need to have your cake baked, cooled, and ready to frost. Follow my easy recipe for my very best vanilla cake. It’s such a versatile cake and perfect for birthdays!

Buttercream – you need a lot of buttercream for this cake because it’s used for both the filling and decorating the outside of the cake. Follow my buttercream recipe for best results.

Food coloring – when coloring frosting I almost always use gel food coloring because you don’t need a lot to get bright and beautiful colors. For this cake you’ll need 5-7 batches of colored buttercream for the Among Us characters, filling, and outer layer of the cake.

Sprinkles – I used white confetti sprinkles which are a super easy way to create the effect of stars in space. If you can’t find this particular kind then silver balls will also work or go for multi-colored sprinkles.

Stencils or toothpicks – if you have a steady hand and are great at drawing then you can use a toothpick to draw outlines of the characters on the cake otherwise create or print out a stencil to help.

How to make Among Us Cake

Different colored buttercream in bowl and a hand piping it on a cake

    1. Create batches of different colored buttercream, one for each of the among us characters bodysuits and a gray for the visors. Makes sure to also create two bigger batches of black and white buttercream of the filling and outside.

    2. Pipe the buttercream filling onto the first vanilla cake layer. I split my second batch of buttercream in two to create white and purple colors and spiraled them to create a fun visual effect (see photo 2 above). You can opt to do this or just go with one color. Continue will all layers of the cake placing them one on top of another.

    3. Next, spread the black buttercream all over the layered cake.

    4. Smooth it out using a side scraper so the cake is evenly covered.

    5. Use white confetti sprinkles and sprinkle them over the black cake. This is an easy way to give the visual effect of stars in space!

    6. Next pipe, the among us characters onto the cake using the different colored buttercream (see my tips section for this).

    7. Chill the cake then smooth any rough areas.

    8. I used a stencil to cut out one sugar cookie and decorated it with buttercream for my cake topper.

    9. Gently press the sugar cookie into the top of the cake. I cut out my sugar cookie with longer legs so they can be stuck into the cake.

    10. Cut into slices and serve.

Pro tips for making this recipe

    • To make the characters you can either draw the outline of them with a toothpick straight onto the cake and fill it in with buttercream OR cut out a drawn or printed stencil and draw around it.
    • The cake is easy to customize with any characters you like, just draw or print out the stencils and create the colored buttercream as instructed above.
    • I think that vanilla cake gives a great visual effect against the black outer buttercream but you can opt for a different flavor like Red Velvet Cake or Chocolate Cake.
    • You’ll need a lot of buttercream for this for both the filling and decoration, make sure to follow my buttercream recipe and that your butter is at room temperature before starting!
    • It’s easier to smooth out the buttercream on the characters once it’s been chilled slightly.
    • Use small piping bags and cut the nozzles small too so you have more control and can be precise when piping the detail.
    • If you can’t find white confetti sprinkles you could use silver balls or any sprinkles you like. You can also pipe small dots of white buttercream all over the cake.
    • For the cake topper, you can follow my sugar cookie recipe and use your stencil to cut out one or more of the Among Us characters or you can opt to buy a cake topper.
    • When cutting out your sugar cookie topper cut the legs a little longer so they can be stuck into the cake.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this in advance?

Yes, making it in advance is a great idea it will still be at its best 1-2 days in advance, any longer and it may start to dry out.

How long does the cake last?

The cake will keep well in the fridge for around 4-5 days.

    Can I freeze it?

Yes, cakes like this freeze really well for a long time. Make sure to wrap it tightly in plastic wrap then foil. You can store it in slices or larger pieces, make sure to thaw it completely before serving.

    Ingredients

    • 1 Vanilla cake
    • 1 1/2 batches Buttercream Frosting
    • Food coloring
    • White confetti sprinkles optional

    Instructions

    • Divide buttercream into two batches. Color one with black food coloring for covering the cake and the other can remain white or be colored for the filling. I used both white and purple for the cake’s interior.
    • Pipe buttercream onto the first cake layer then add a layer on top and continue building the cake layers. You can add some visual interest by piping rings of different colors for the cake’s interior.
    • Cover the cake with black buttercream and smooth it until the cake is evenly covered using a cake scraper.
    • Either press white confetti sprinkles on top or pipe little dots of white buttercream to create an array of stars on your cake.
    • You can draw the characters onto the cake with a toothpick OR create a stencil by drawing one on a piece of paper then cutting it out. You can even print one out if you’re not a fan of drawing.
    • Mix a smaller batch of buttercream up and divide into 5 or so batches. Most will be for the character’s bodysuits one light gray batch will be for the visors.
    • Transfer buttercream to piping bags and snip the tips off. Try to keep them pretty small so you can pipe the frosting neatly.
    • Pipe the outline for each person then fill in and smooth with a small spatula or knife. Pipe the visor with gray buttercream and repeat for the remaining figures. Chill the cake and smooth any areas that look a bit rough.
    • I used my stencil to cut one sugar cookie for the cake topper, which I decorated with buttercream. You can pipe a figure with candy melts which can be covered in buttercream or just pipe more figures on top of the cake.
    • Serve or store for later.
