A fruity, tropical cocktail, this hurricane drink has a long past. However, the most popular version of this cocktail is credited to Pat O’Brien, who owned a bar in New Orleans’ French Quarter. In the 1940s, domestic liquor was limited, but rum was plentiful, which led to experimenting and this iconic NOLA cocktail that was an immediate hit.

Loaded with two different rums, fruity juices, and two syrups, this boozy cocktail is a fun tropical drink that is a refreshing treat on a hot summer day. Perfect for Mardi Gras or any other occasion, this is a party drink everyone will love. Need another fun cocktail recipe? Try my rosé sangria recipe, Aperol spritz recipe, or caipirinha recipe.

What You Need to Make This Recipe

Ingredients needed to make a hurricane drink.

Rum — this hurricane drink recipe uses both light and dark rum. White rum gives the cocktail a light, sweet flavor, whereas dark rum adds a deep, smoky-sweet flavor. No need to break the bank on expensive rum for this drink as there are more flavor notes in the drink that are more forward.

Juice — you will need orange juice, lime juice, and passion fruit juice. If possible, use freshly squeezed orange and lime juice for the best flavor.

Grenadine syrup — you will need grenadine syrup for added fruity sweetness and to give your cocktail that signature reddish tint.

Simple syrup — this cocktail is meant to be sweet, so you will need simple syrup for more added sweetness to the drink. You can use store-bought or homemade simple syrup.

Pro Tips for Making This Recipe

    • Traditionally, you serve hurricanes in a glass shaped like a hurricane lamp. While the hurricane glass isn’t mandatory, it’ll be a fun addition to your collection. Try making my milkshake recipe, Colorado Bulldog recipe, or Bloody Mary recipe to serve in these fun glasses.
    • Don’t have a cocktail shaker? You can use a mason jar or any jar with a tight-fitting lid.
    • Don’t have a cocktail strainer? Simply strain the drink through a fine-mesh sieve.
    • Bring your orange and limes to room temperature before using them to get the most juice out of them. You can also roll them on the counter to loosen the juices before juicing.
    • If you cannot find passion fruit juice, try passion fruit purée.
