If you haven’t tried a mudslide before, you’ll love how sweet, rich, and velvety this cocktail is. It’s a simple creamy cocktail that resembles a mudslide thanks to the drizzle of chocolate syrup coating the glass. It’s shockingly easy to make, and all you need is a cocktail shaker to combine the alcohol.
Don’t be fooled by the sweetness of the mudslide. The drink is not only strong but has caffeine as well. It is almost as strong as a margarita and has enough caffeine in it that you might be kept up if enjoyed it too late in the evening. What You Need to Make This Recipe
Vodka — the vodka doesn’t need to be super expensive and high quality but do get one you enjoy.
Coffee liqueur — I like to use Kahlúa. It’s made with arabica coffee beans and Mexican-grown sugar, giving off delicious coffee notes and sweetness for your mudslide.
Irish cream — Baileys is my go-to Irish cream. This creamy liqueur adds chocolate and vanilla flavors as well as sweetness. Kerrygold’s Irish Cream is a great alternative as well.
Heavy cream — I wouldn’t suggest using milk as heavy cream gives a classic mudslide its rich and creamy taste.
How to Make a Mudslide
1. Spread chocolate sauce on a plate and then dip the rim of a cocktail glass in the chocolate to coat. Drizzle the inside of the glass with chocolate sauce, if desired.
2. In a cocktail shaker, combine the vodka and coffee liqueur.
3. Then add Irish cream and heavy cream. Fill the cocktail shaker with ice.
4. Shake until the outside is frosty, about 20 seconds.
5. Strain the mudslide into the cocktail glass.
6. Garnish the drink with shaved chocolate, if desired.
Pro Tips for Making This Recipe
- Flavored vodkas such as espresso and chocolate vodka also work well in this mudslide recipe.
- Don’t have a cocktail shaker? You can use a mason jar or any jar with a tight-fitting lid then strain through a mesh strainer.
- Avoid adding crushed ice to the shaker as the ice will melt quicker and water down the cocktail.
- For a colder cocktail, place the vodka in the freezer. It won’t freeze due to the alcohol content but instead, keep the drink cold.
- To quickly shave chocolate to garnish your mudslide, use a box grater.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the origin of this cocktail?
The Mudslide cocktail was created at Wreck Bar in Rum Point Club on Grand Cayman Island when guests asked for a White Russian, but the bar did not have the ingredients. Instead, the bartender used the ingredients on hand, which included Irish cream. Over time, the drink made its way to American restaurants with tweaks.
How do I make the frozen version?
You can easily make a frozen mudslide with similar ingredients. Add vodka, coffee liqueur, Irish cream, a scoop of vanilla ice cream instead of heavy cream, and ice to a blender. Blend until smooth and serve with whipped cream and shaved chocolate for a frozen boozy milkshake treat.
Can I make this on the rocks?
You can! Instead of shaking the cocktail together with ice, stir the ingredients together and pour over ice.
